In today’s fast-paced world, the idea of homemaking can often feel outdated or overwhelming. Add the word “Biblical” to it, and you might wonder how this applies to modern moms juggling work, kids, and endless to-do lists. But Biblical homemaking is far from being old-fashioned—it’s a beautiful, purposeful calling rooted in Scripture and designed to bring glory to God through the care of our families and homes.
Biblical homemaking is about more than just keeping a clean house or cooking meals. At its core, it’s about stewarding the resources God has given us. That is our time; energy; and homes, in order to create a space that reflects His love and serves our families.
Biblical homemaking involves:
The Bible gives us a beautiful blueprint on what Biblical homemaking looks like in the book of Proverbs. Proverbs 31 tells the story of a virtuous woman who manages her household with wisdom, diligence, and care: “She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:27).
The Proverbs 31 woman can seem pretty intimidating to a modern mom, although she is described to be a woman of grace. I myself was actually jealous of her, but as I grew in faith and experience, I learned that with God’s help becoming a virtuous woman was attainable.
As moms and wives, we have the unique opportunity to shape the atmosphere of our homes. A home grounded in Biblical principles becomes a sanctuary where our families can grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
God calls us to be caretakers and nurturers. Titus 2:3-5 encourages women to “be busy at home” and “to be kind” so that “no one will malign the word of God.” By embracing Biblical homemaking, we align our hearts and actions with His design for our roles. In my experience God’s design is the best design for our life, and for more wonderful than anything else.
Creating a warm and welcoming home fosters connection and unity. Through intentional acts like sharing meals, reading Scripture together, or simply listening to each other, we build relationships that withstand life’s challenges.
The way we manage our homes and model faith leaves a lasting legacy for our children. When they see us living out our faith through daily acts of love and service, they’re more likely to carry those values into their own lives. As mothers, it’s important to remember we are shaping the future generation of mankind. God designed mankind in his image, therefore the best way to raise our children is according to his word.
Homemaking in the 21st century looks different from the days of our grandmothers. But the principles of Biblical homemaking remain beautiful and timeless. Here are practical ways to embrace this calling:
Ask God for wisdom and strength to manage your home well. Dedicate your daily tasks to Him, and trust that even the smallest chores can glorify Him when done with love.
You don’t have to do it all. Focus on creating a home where your family feels loved and cared for. Let go of perfection and prioritize relationships over tasks. If you aren’t sure what to prioritize, ask God to reveal this to you.
If you prefer to do so, use tools like planners or apps to manage your time effectively. I love a beautiful, yet simple notebook and pen for planning and journaling, but technology has created many useful homemaking resources. Set aside moments for prayer, family devotions, and quality time with your spouse and children. Remember not to fill your schedule so full that there isn’t time for God and family.
Homemaking is an act of service. Even Jesus, our savior, came to Earth to serve others. So whether it’s cleaning; folding laundry; cooking dinner; or comforting a child, approach these tasks with joy, knowing they reflect God’s love.
Display Bible verses in your home, read aloud, pray aloud, play worship music, or start a family devotional. These small actions keep God at the center of your household and helps plant his word into your heart.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or inadequate in our homemaking journey. Remember, Biblical homemaking is not about achieving perfection; it’s about faithfulness. God doesn’t expect you to have the “perfect” home. He desires your heart.
Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Lean on God’s grace, and take small steps each day to align your home with His purposes.
Biblical homemaking is a beautiful way to honor God and bless your family. It’s not about following a rigid schedule or set of rules, but about embracing your role with faith, love, and intentionality. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or looking for fresh inspiration, remember that every small act of service in your home matters.
You are shaping a legacy that reflects God’s love and goodness, one dish, one prayer, and one hug at a time.
