It’s important to teach our children about faith because in a world that’s so unpredictable, faith is one true thing they have to rely on. As much as we want to protect and nurture our children for as long as we possibly can, there will come. a day when they have to lead their own lives. When this happens we can hope that they’ll remember all the life lessons we’ve taught them. But even if they forget, we don’t have to worry, because their faith in God will always guide them down the correct path in life.
As parents, we’re called to “train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6) Here’s why it’s important to teach our kids about faith:
Let’s explore how to do this in practical and meaningful ways.
Children learn best by watching their parents. Your actions and attitudes speak louder than words.
One of the most impactful moments for my kids was seeing me pray when I was overwhelmed. They noticed that I turned to God first, which taught them that they can do the same. Now, not only does my 5-year-old son pray when he needs help, but I’ve also caught him praying for his baby sister. He even prays aloud for me when I am displaying moments of impatience or overwhelm.
This is a gentle and beautiful reminder that God can use our children in wonderful ways, just as he does us. Remember that even from a young age, our actions matter in the face of our children.
Prayer is one of the most powerful ways to teach kids about faith and how to grow in relationship to God. It’s a direct line to Him that they can access anytime. We may not be around forever, but God always remains.
At dinner and sometimes bedtime, we take turns praying as a family. Hearing my children’s heartfelt prayers for their friends or thanking God for their day melts my heart and reminds me of the beauty of childlike faith.
The Bible is God’s Word and the ultimate guide for life. Making it a regular part of your family’s routine helps your kids understand its relevance.
Faith shouldn’t feel like a separate part of life. Instead it should be integrated into everything we do.
On family hikes and nature walks, we often pause to thank God for the beauty around us. My son loves pointing out trees, rainfall, clouds, flowers, streams, or animals saying, “God made that!”
Being part of a church community reinforces what you teach at home and provides additional support for your child’s faith journey.
Our church has a vibrant children’s ministry, it is something we prayed for. Now, my son looks forward to Sunday school each week. This is a great way to highlight how faith is fun and engaging.
Serving others is a great way to teach kids to live out their faith by showing love and compassion.
Toy donation is an easy and helpful way to incorporate this, by involving your children. Not only does it teach them to have a giving spirit, but it also helps with decluttering and toy rotation. I recommend trying toy donation each year around Thanksgiving and before Christmas, as an advent activity.
Kids are naturally curious, and their questions can lead to meaningful discussions.
Myself and a group of other christian moms have recently began studying apologetics in a motherhood bible study group we attend. It has been transformative for the way we approach our kids faith questions. Here’s the book we’re studying. It comes highly recommended.
Memorizing Bible verses helps kids carry God’s Word in their hearts, providing comfort and guidance.
Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”) is another great one to start with. It boosts their confidence and reminds them to rely on God.
Everyday experiences are perfect opportunities to teach kids about faith.
Teaching faith is a lifelong journey. Be consistent in your efforts and patient with the process.
There will be days when family devotions don’t go as planned or prayers feel rushed, but consistency matters more than perfection.
Teaching your kids about faith is one of the most rewarding aspects of parenting. By leading with love, patience, and intentionality, you’re helping them build a relationship with God that will last a lifetime.
Remember, it’s not about being a perfect parent, it’s about pointing your children to a perfect Savior. Start with small steps, rely on God’s grace, and trust Him to do the rest.
